About the Society

Posted by Joy Russell

The Madison County Genealogical and Historical Society is an active, non-profit organization which was formed in 1981, with the purpose of promoting interest in, collecting and preserving the history of Madison County, Arkansas, and its people. We also serve our community through our free library and research facility and by the publication of our quarterly, "The Madison County Musings"

Our offices and research facility located at 220 N. Gaskill St in Huntsville

Back in 1981, MCGHS was originally located in a small office on the 2nd floor of the Madison County Court House. Soon, the society outgrew this office and it was moved to a small, but larger building at the corner of Highway 74 and Airport Road. As the years past, this building became to small as the society grew.

Once the new Madison County Library was built on North College in 2009, The Society officers were moved to its present location on Gaskill Street. If you are wanting to research your family history, we are your first stop. We have catalogued all known obituaries in Madison County, we have an extensive collection of family histories, and complete and indexed U.S. census records for Madison County. A list of all our family genealogies in the reseach library may be viewed by clicking on "Family Histories on file" on the menu on the right.

One of the many racks of books and other items of interest the society has for sale. All of them can be ordered on this website! Simply click on "Publications for sale - Main Page" from the menu on the right (or by selecting "Publications" from the top of this page) and you can begin to peruse our selection of Madison County historical and research books.
